AbstractThe solar cycle 24 and the minimum that proceeded it have gained special attention from the scientific community due to the anomalous characteristics that were registered during this period. In this context, this work discusses the behavior of the Brazilian equatorial ionosphere in terms of the F2 layer critical frequency (foF2) and the peak height F2 layer (hmF2) parameters during the solar minimum periods that cover the solar cycles 23/24 (2009) ) and 22/23 (1996). For that, ionograms collected by Digisonde over the equatorial region of São Luis (2.33° S; 44° W, dip in 2009: -5.7) are carefully analyzed. Additionally, our results are compared with those got the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) in order to evaluate how the accuracy of this model during this special period of a deep solar minimum of 2009. Up to now, our main findings are listed below: In general, the season mean values of foF2 and hmF2 in 2009 were lower than in 1996, except in the summer when the hmF2 in 2009 presented an anomalous response to solar variability. In this case, the hmF2 in 2009 was considerably higher than those in 1996 during a large part of the day (Figure 1). The prereversal enhancement of the zonal electric field (PRE) in 2009 was observed at about 30 minutes earlier than in 1996 (Figure 1). A Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis of the observational data showed clearly the differences between the 1996 and 2009 data. In the amplitude of frequency, for example, such differences were higher mainly between October and December months. On the other hand, the amplitude of height in 2009 was considerably high than those of 1996 throughout the year (Figure 2). With respect to the comparison of observational data with IRI model, large discrepancies were found mainly in the amplitude of hmF2, revealing in this way that this empirical model does not represent very well periods of solar minimum activity over the Brazilian region, especially that of 2009. Additionally, the behavior of the amplitude, diurnal, semidiurnal, and terdiurnal periodicity of hmF2 and foF2 of equatorial latitude for the ionosonde data and the IRI predictions are summarized in Table 1.
